URSA mini 4.6K ISO Test

03.02.2017

On last week I have done a quick test of Blackmagic URSA 4.6K mini with support of Rentaltss house (www.rentaltss.com)  . The aim of my test was pretty simple: I wanted to check what image delivery a new camera sensor on different ISO. So I just wanted to get a practical test to be able to see the footage with my own eyes.

Test was very simple. I took Kinoflo 4х4, black cloth, color chart Х-rite and Dedolight 150W.
Used ND Tiffen filters ND 0,3/0,6/0,9 to compensate ISO shift.

First run it using Apple Pro Ress XQ and same test setting it to RAW Lossless.
Plus I did a quick rapid test 120fps in 2К mode.

Camera settings:

Resolution 4.6K downscaled to HD in DaVinci.
Apple Pro Ress XQ Codec.
Film Gamma.

Lens Canon L 16-35mm
Key light Kinfolk 4х4 with 3200К lamps.
ND Tiffen filters.

Aperture of the lens was the same in all shots - T 4.0
I compensate ISO shift with ND filters Tiffen.

In DaVinci i put on top of the footage LUT from the Blackmagic list: Blackmagic 4.6K to Rec 709 v3

That gave me a nice contrast and saturation with correct hue of skin tone and WB in my shots.
NO EXTRA COLOR CORRECTIONS OR TWEAKS.

I rendered final clip from DaVinci in mov Apple Pro Ress 422 HQ 1920х1080р.
Created mp4 file in Aimersoft Convertor for Vimeo.

Final thoughts.

Looking through the whole footage in DaVinci on my iiyama display I can say a few things:

1. ND Tiffen filters gave the image greenish hue especially on 400 and 800 ISO. You can see it on my skin. Well, that is pretty normal stuff. Not all ND give a clear image. Usually they can contaminate your image. All of my college admits it too.

2. The most unusuall thing I found out is a blueish shift in shadows with occurs on 1600 ISO.
What it is and how come it appears - NO IDEA BY NOW.
The only one thing how can I explain the shadows becomes blue is maybe because of the walls which was painted with the light blue color.
But I really not sure about that. What I am more sure is that is a sensor issue.

3. The sensor produce more visible electronic noise on ISO 800 and ISO 1600 which I personally DON'T LIKE.
That is why on Commercial I was exposing it as 400.

4. It is seems that the sensor does not match my Sekonic exposure meter. The image looks under exposed.
You look at the display and histogram or false colors and you want to open aperture by + 1 Stop to get your proper exposure.

Son I plan to make another big Test for Blackmagic URSA 4.6K mini to eliminate painted room + also we will do test outside on street.

So stay tuned. Thanks for checking my Blog and Test.
